"The
goal is not more information in more places, but an information society
- open and inclusive - in which knowledge empowers all people, and serves
the cause of improving the human condition.
The media are fellow stakeholders in that effort.
And freedom of the press
is essential if you are to fulfil your vital role."
Kofi Annan,
UN Secretary General,
keynote address at the WEMF

A broadcasters' contribution to the Information Society
The World Media Electronic Forum (WEMF) gathered the world's media leaders in Geneva in
December 2003, highlighting the contribution of broadcasting and broadcasters to the Information
Society. A historical first, all of the world's broadcasting unions agreed on a common platform
to be submitted to the Summit.
The WEMF statements, discussions and workshop summaries outline
the contours of what might become a world broadcasters’ action plan – highlighting
basic principles, professional standards and the industry’s commitments to social development
and democracy.
Summaries, statements and other documentation from the WEMF interactive sessions and
workshops are now available on this website.
