About the WEMF

Concept

The Information Society must be conceived with a major input of radio and television.

The World Electronic Media Forum (WEMF) – an event of the World Summit on the Information Society – gathered the world’s media leaders in Geneva in December 2003. The goal of the Forum was to assess the role of the electronic media in the future by providing a platform for broadcasters - both public and private - from different nations and cultures to share their priorities and concerns.

The WEMF presented to the world at large the profound changes that the Information Society is bringing about in the media.

The outcomes of the WEMF – statements, discussions and workshop conclusions – outline the contours of what might become a world broadcasters’ action plan.

The WEMF was organized in partnership with the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Switzerland, host country to the WSIS.
