Deane, James
Executive Director of Panos London. Mr Deane was one of the founding members of Panos, established in 1986. Prior to this position he worked for Earthscan, a predecessor organization to Panos. He has been responsible in turn at Panos for its global media strateg y , for its project development, and for its AIDS programme as well as conceiving and then directing, the Panos Communication & Social Change Programme. Mr Deane is the author of several publications on the role of communications in development, communication technologies and on HIV/AIDS.

Desai, Nitin
Nitin Desai of India is the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General for the World Summit on the Infor mation Society. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Desai served as United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Socia l Affairs from 1992. Before joining the United Nations, he served as Secretary and Chief Economic A dviser in India's Ministry of Finance. Born in 1941 and educated in India and the United Kingdom, Mr. Desai has also lectured in economics and published a number of articles on development planning and economics.

Dyke, Greg
Director General of the BBC at the time of the session. Educated at York University. Started his broadcasting career in 1977 at London Weekend Television. Editor-in-Chief of TV-am. Director of Programmes of TVS, then LWT. Chief Executive of LWT, then Pearson Television. First chairman of Channel 5. Chairman of Indep endent Telelv ision Associa tion, of GMTV. He joined the BBC in 1999.

Ebisawa, Katsuji
President of NHK ( Japan Broadcasting Corporation) and the ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union). Mr Ebisawa received the Internationa l Emmy Directorate Award in 2002 for his contribution to the development of the world broadcasting community with HDTV. He continues to focus on the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting that commenced on 1 December in J apan; and to further promote dialogue among civilizations through broadcasting. Born in 1934, he joined NHK in 1957 and has served as President since 1997.

Epoté, Denise
D'origine camerounaise , Denise Epoté Durand est diplômée de l'Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme de Yaoundé. En 1985, à la création de la Cameroon Radio Television, elle devient la première présentatrice vedette du journal télévisé. En avril 1994, elle intègre TV5, qui lui confie la direction Afrique dès 1998. Elle y anime un entretien avec les décideurs du continent, emission qui lui a valu en 2001 le prix Pan African Broadcasting, Heritage and Achievement Awards de la meilleure journaliste africaine. Elle est vice-présidente de l'Union des Journalistes Francophones.

Flint, David
Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Authority. Mr Flint also serves as the President, English Speaking Union and National Convenor of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy. He has published books such as The Cane Toad Republic and The Twilight of the Elites as well as articles on topics such as the media, international economic law, Australia’s constitution and on Australia ’s 1999 constitutional referendum.

Gowing, Nik
Main programme anchor, BBC World. Anchored "The World Today ", "NewsDesk", "HardTalk", "Simpson's World". His 9-11 coverage earned him the 2002 Hotbird award. He fronted the coverage of Princess Diana's accident. He was principal anchor for much of BBC World extended coverage of major inter national crises like Kosovo. In the 2003 Iraq war, he anchored BBC News coverage across 4 BBC TV channels from Central Command in Qatar. In 1996, he won the BAFTA Best News Coverage for his reporting in Bosnia. He is also a renowned lecturer and acclaimed researcher on issues related to information and the role of media.
